Every Step in Canning by Grace Viall Gray
As a home economics professor, Grace Viall Gray began lecturing across the country on the cold pack method of canning in the early 1900's. The cold pack method was still relatively unexplored at her time. After being encouraged by numerous housekeepers who enjoyed her instructions, she published a book that explained the methods she taught. This book is the result of her study and work. Charlotte from Canning Jars. Etc (http://canningjarsetc.blogspot.com) commented: "This book was fun because it was written when people were just starting to move away from the open kettle method. The author understood a lot sooner than some of her peers why the open kettle method often results in spoiled food. However, she did not yet know enough about what PH range bacteria can survive in to divide her recipes up into low-acid and high-acid categories. She writes several low acid recipes that call for canning in a water bath. From a historical perspective, this book is very interesting. As for actually using the recipes, somebody who is experienced in canning could take the ingredients and quantities for some of her soups and such, and update the canning instructions." We do not recommend this book for a beginner canner. This is the first volume in a series of three books on preserving by Grace Viall Gray. 92 Pages

The Book of Sports-Games
In 1840, William Martin wrote of the games of his day. Surprisingly, we still play some of the same games, with a few tweaks to the rules. Have you ever played Bandy Ball? You probably have as golf. Maybe in Jane Austin you have read about bowls and quoits, and Mr. Martin tells you exactly how to play both! Finally, this book concludes with some common games for marbles that our great-grandfathers enjoyed as children. 38 pages.
